Mountain And Road Bikes: What’s The Difference?

Often it can seem daunting when it comes to the task of selecting a bike. This is even more true for beginners who don’t know about the different types of bikes you can get. You will find mountain bikes to have better suspension and are therefore more comfortable but they are also heavier and not as fast as road bikes. So how do you decide which bike is right for you?

First of all you have to decide what the purpose of the bike is. To do this there are a few points that you should take into consideration, the first is where you plan to ride your bike. Pay extra attention to the terrain and length of your journeys. A comfortable bike that can handle different types of terrain can be ideal. Of course if you need speed and you will be on the road then racing bikes are probably most suitable for you. If you need the ability to go over different types of terrain then you will most likely be better off with a mountain bike.

This brings us nicely to next consideration which is how much you value comfort and speed. In general the faster bikes are faster because they’re lighter and this generally means removing features such as suspension, which will of course not be as comfortable for you to ride. Not only this but you’ll find that each type of bike requires a different riding posture. Road bikes require that you use a posture that makes you more aerodynamic and this can sometimes be uncomfortable for people who have never ridden like this before.

Once you’ve chosen your particular type of bike the next thing you need to concentrate on is the exact model that you want to buy. In every bike range you will find that there are many different models for you to choose from. Carbon fibre bikes are the fastest but also come with the largest price tag forroad bicycles. When it comes to mountain bikes extra features to consider are the wheel size, suspension and braking system.

Of course the final decision will come down to your budget. Naturally in a world without money everyone would have a carbon fibre bike with all the extras but if money is a concern you can still manage to get a high-quality bike at an affordable price.

Which Type of Bike do you use to get to work?

We’ve seen them all, the wide array of different cyclists on their morning commute. All wearing different cycle clothing, from suits to lycra. All riding different types of bikes ranging from streamlined road bikes to slow and steady granny bikes.

Obviously the choice that people make as to which type of bike to ride is based upon what they are going to use it for. A number of things affect your choice of bike, what things you need to take with you, how far you’re going, will they have showers at the office.

Most likely many people think that they have made the right decision when it comes to making the morning commute. But have they really? Would it work out faster for a granny bike to get to work over a fixed gear bike? You would instantly think now, however, I think I can prove you wrong.

If you take 4 different cyclists and see how long it takes them to get from their homes to work. If we pick out 2 lycra wearing cyclists and place one on a road bike and the other on a fixed gear bike. Then pick up your other 2 cyclists, one on a granny bike, then other on a mountain bike.

Of course a large number of people will think that the fixed gear and the road bike will shoot off and beat the others by miles. This is true, however, they haven’t won the race yet. When these 2 get to their work, they are basically a waterfall of sweat. So for them, you have to add on the time for a shower onto their travel time.

For the other 2, the mountain biker did get there quite quickly, however, still a little sticky, a shower might be required. Finally, the granny bike, it may have come last, however, the relaxed ride is sweat free. No need to have a shower, the rider simply walks into work.

So once you factor in all the amount of time taken for each cyclist to get to their work, and then add on any extra time to recover from the cycle. The granny bike takes the victory at a steady speed. It really does show that slow and steady will win the race.

Next time you get ready for the commute, take a moment to think about the fastest way to get there.
